Women Riders Month

May is Women Riders Month

May is Women Riders Month

May is a great month for motorcyclists! Not only is it the month to create and spread motorcycle safety awareness but it is also a month to celebrate our lady riders! Created a few years back by Harley-Davidson, May has since been declared Women Riders Month. Even more exciting is that lady riders are celebrated globally every year on May 7 for International Female Ride Day.

If you or a lady rider you know have been interested in joining a lady rider’s club, check with your local motorcycle dealership and you may find a new group to enjoy the open road with. Another great source for women rider’s is the Women Riders Now website. This upcoming weekend, May 27-30, they will be hosting the Babe’s Ride Out East Coast event, their first ever all-women camping trip on the East coast in 2016! Check out their Calendar of Events for a summer full of rallies and riding.

Harley-Davidson’s Rider’s Edge New Rider Course is a great way of introducing potential lady riders’ to life on the open road. Find your local Harley-Davidson dealership to get more information on how this program works and if it would be suited for you or a friend!

Share the Road

PARISIAN

Across the country, May has been designated Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month as a way to encourage motorists to “share the road” with bikers. According to Governors Highway Safety Association, while motorcycles only account for 3% of vehicles on the road, they make up 14% of all motor-vehicle fatalities. Even though motorcycle fatalities are decreasing, it is important to continue promoting motorcycle safety and awareness. Here’s how motorists can help:

  1. Give bikers space. Share the road but do not attempt to share the same lane. Allow a full lane width for bikers to safely maneuver the roads. Also be sure to have enough following distance in case the rider suddenly brakes, changes speed or attempts to avoid hazards such as potholes or railroad crossings.
  2. Check twice. Before switching lanes, be sure to use side and rear-view mirrors. Check your shoulders for riders that may be in your blind spots. If you’re at an obstructed intersection where you do not have a clear view, wait until you can see that it is safe to drive again.
  3. Avoid distraction. Research has shown that drivers behind the wheel are distracted 50% of the time. Avoid texting, eating or any other activities that remove your hands from the steering wheel and eyes from the road.

Here’s how riders can help:

  1. Wear a DOT-compliant helmet for safety.
  2. Do not ride while impaired. Alcohol accounts for nearly one-third of motorcycle fatalities in the United States.
  3. Make yourself visible. Use signal lights and ride in a position where you are most visible to drivers.

Check Your Helmet!

Check Your Helmet Month

April marks an important month for bikers and motorcycle safety — Check Your Helmet Month! Check Your Helmet Month is an initiative to ensure bikers get the highest quality of safety in the event a helmet will be used to save a life. Here are some tips and reminders:

  1. Aging – If your helmet has not been damaged or dropped, be sure to replace it every 3-5 years. Basic use and UV rays from those long, sunny rides can reduce the protective quality of your helmet after a while. Also, be sure to check with your local motorcycle dealership for helmet trade-in offers in the month of April. Some dealers offer up to 15% off your next helmet purchase with a trade-in.
  2. Impact – Crashes or even one drop can cause serious damage to the protective quality of your helmet. Even if there are no visible signs of damage, you should replace your helmet immediately if any impact occurs.
  3. Fit and Function – For the best fit, your helmet should rest about one inch above your eyebrows and should NOT roll forward or sideways when you move. Many dealers with apparel stores will help you find the proper fit if you ask! For function, check your local and state laws to make sure your helmet meets the minimum safety standards. You can also do this by looking for DOT stickers on the inside or outside of the helmet. Having this sticker ensures that your helmet has passed its tests for impact, penetration, retention and peripheral vision.

Additionally, make sure that your helmet is never exposed to insect repellents, gasoline, excessive heat or other harmful liquids and fumes. Exposure to harsh chemicals can degrade the helmet’s protective materials without any visible sign.

For more information on protection and helmet suggestions, check out this flyer by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and the MotoUSA blog.
